To commemorate the Sharpeville shootings of 1976, in which young black South Africans were shot for refusing to learn science and maths in Afrikaans and to draw awareness to the linguistic inequalities that exists still today, UBuntu Bridge is launching “Teach Xhosa as a Conversational Language (TXCL)”, the inaugural Teacher Training Programme from UBuntu Bridge, equipping Xhosa mother tongue speakers (or others) to teach Xhosa as a Conversational language in any setting.
With this training we seek to empower candidates with the skills to teach Xhosa as a Conversational language (TXCL), designed as an equivalent to the TEFL (Teach English as a foreign Language) qualification that exists for English. We seek to create jobs and valuable services that can be used in multiple settings where people are wanting to learn isiXhosa.
The training will provide:
- Facilitation skills in a live setting
- Facilitation skills for multi format online settings, including lecturing/presenting, group practice sessions, individual coaching, testing and assessing.
- Teaching methodology that can be applied in other topics
- Flexible Curriculum structures
- Supporting materials for teachers who want to get started
- Introduction to entrepreneurship and a viable business model to get started
How long will it take?
The intention is for the training to take place over one month.
Who can join?
Anyone wanting to earn money from teaching Xhosa. Due to limited resources, we will select candidates from the applications we receive via the form below.
The Grand Vision?
To create a national culture of language exchange (learning and teaching) as part of the greater reconciliation and nation-building project.
When does it start?
We are hoping to raise the funds required and start the training in July 2023.

About the UB Teacher Training
It's been 17 years since Craig Makhosi founded UBuntu Bridge, an extension of his calling to bridge gaps in South African society.
In that time, UBuntu Bridge grew into an organisation teaching Xhosa, inspiring language learning, facilitating cross-cultural events and training teachers in-house.
At the centre of it all was the development of a style, methodology and curriculum for teaching Xhosa that is based in practical application, an approach that recognises the unique circumstances and setting of learning Xhosa in South Africa.
Now for the first time, after many years of being asked, UBuntu Bridge announces its "Teaching Xhosa as a Conversational Language" (TXCL) Course, intended to function in the same way as TEFL qualifications due for English speakers wanting to teach English!
When does it Start?
Course start date will be announced when the first 150 students have applied! Goal: 15 January 2021
