As a community activist and also operating in the policital arena, personally, it is incumbent upon me to learn another language. The process started with your session and yes you are correct, I've made some hilarious mistakes. Its however a wonderful experience and the personal victories are slow but empowering. There is no turning back now, it keeps on tugging at you when you hear words or sounds you recognise from conversations in passing. uCraig, enkosi kakhulu. You are a pioneer and you are changing people's lives! Hamba gahle, God Bless! - Vanessa Hood
As an English speaking radio journalist for SAfm, there were times when my attempts to correctly pronounce Xhosa names and places were completely unacceptable, even cringeworthy. I can't pretend to be fluent now, but at least, having completed Craig's course, I have a better grip, not just on the pronunciation (the CD in particular has been enormously helpful with this) but on the very basics of meeting and greeting Xhosa speaking people. And whilst I may not be able to join in robust Xhosa conversations, it has been a breakthrough just to be able to pick out words here and there listening to my colleagues speak. The six week course was just a beginning, like one veil lifting with others starting to flutter - from here I think it's up to me to commit to making more of an effort and overcome the embarassment of being unable to converse with other South Africans. It has given me even greater respect for the hundreds of Xhosa speaking people I have met over the years who have so determindly conquered ngesIngesi - which is a far more complicated language. Finally, Craig's insights to Xhosa life, lifestyles, humour and culture were an unexpected bonus. Enkosi Craig! - Nancy Richards, presenter OTHERWISE, SAfm
A very good teacher, with lots of sound contemporary and historical knowledge, entertaining, relaxed. - Barbara Johanssen, teacher, writer/editor/reviewer of educational learning materials. There was a great atmosphere created. It was enjoyable and very informative. - Beryl-Lyn Cocks, Operation Manger for the Cape Region of Valuation Alliance.
Relaxed, informal, non-judgemental but focused. Having tried books, and having heard other people have done the UCT summer school & found it too much, Iâd say this was the ideal way to get underway and start speaking immediately. - Bryan Rostron, writer
It is an important exercise for all South Africans and through Craigâs course it can be an enjoyable and achievable exercise. - Greg Lomas, Creative Studio Owner
Craig teaches Xhosa at the right speed, not in a rush, and he makes sure that Everyone SPEAKS the language in class, and I feel this is hugely important, as I did Xhosa for 1 year, but the teacher insisted on giving us grammar and would not make us speak or speak to us in Xhosa the way Craig did, and as a result I had no confidence to Speak it, but now I do. - Silvana Silverman, domestic engineer
I feel as a white person one has to make an effort to deserve the reconciliation of the previously oppressed population groups. African native speakers are sort of forced to speak white languages whereas we as mlungus never really have to leave or comfort zones. In my opinion, learning Xhosa is a first crucial step to overcome âracial barriersâ, to open oneâs mind, to show respect and to get involved into and understand different cultures. So invest as much as you can and get started to make the Rainbow Nation work! Itâs great to communicate! (Uxolo, I know it sounds cheesy ;-), but I really mean it) - Yasmin BĂźttgen, About to graduate in urban and transport planning.
âAlthough grammar was explained, the emphasis was on speaking and Craig really helped instill confidence. He is warm, and the class was a happy one.â - Patricia Schonstein a.k.a Nonyaniso, Author
âI have been to three Xhosa courses before, but for the first time did I learn how to construct sentences and hey, wena NDITHETHA NGOKU (I talk now!)â - Philip J Oktober, a.k.a. Mzivukile C.E.O. Machaira Group (PTY) LTD
âOne of the main things the course did for me was lay down a foundation to work from. I now have the basics and the confidence to start building my Xhosa language skills. I also feel that I've made an effort to better understand my South African community.â - Michael v. Rooyen a.k.a ZamZam, Photographer, Designer
"the course is conducted in a relaxed and interactive environment in which each individual has the chance to get as much out of the course as he or she wishes. There was a strong emphasis on learning language needed in any "real life" situation, giving me full confidence to strike up a conversation with any Xhosa speaker" - Gail Womersley, a.k.a Bulelwa
âI enjoyed the course immensely. I loved the relaxed atmosphere and the pace of the learning.â - Johan Snyman
Haibo! (you can tell I like using that :) The pleasure was ours! I had a great time. I thought the classes were of a high standard in both content and structure, the teacher excellent and the course materials very well thought out and put together. You have a great 'product' and an obvious natural ability for this work. And some killer chirps! "Thank god we don't have a culture anymore" will stay with me for a long time ;-) I got a lot out of the course, thanks very much. Nyhani! - Sven Oberg
Being part of your xhosa classes was a beautiful and rewarding period of My life. Needless to say will continue to work with the material and make the most of you exposed us to. Thank you very much for your time effort and understanding. - Ratula Beukman
Craig Charnock is a really good teacher. Probably one of the best I have heard. Lovely relaxed informal style and he forces participation. - Tom Berry
Molo titshala. Ndiyavuya. Enkosi kakhulu. Ndithande izifundo zakho kakhulu. Your course is already very good. That makes it hard to suggest improvements. I found it really helpful to listen to your recordings on my way to and from work, as that ensured two 20-minute sessions of focused isiXhosa practice every day. It was also 100% effective in preventing irritation caused by traffic jams, red lights, iiteksi namajaywalker, etc. Your own system is very good. The best things about the course were that it was fun, that it taught us to communicate with Xhosa-speakers, albeit simply, and that it provided a stimulus to learn more. Sobonana. - Dr. Mike Madden
Dept of the Premier (CEI), Cape Town and Kuilsriver October 2008
Molo Titshala, I thoroughly enjoyed your course. You've unlocked a door and allowed me access to a part of our community that I assumed was only for Xhosa people. I'm often in the Khayelitsha area visiting the schools and I'm now able to greet the staff at the schools in isiXhosa with confidence. The escape phrases are an absolute must after the greeting because my pronunciation is so good that everyone starts asking me questions after that.
Besides the language that you've introduced us to, you've also given us a little bit of insight into the culture of the Xhosa people. I was very moved one day when I shook hands with a principal in the area and he touched his left hand to his right inner elbow during the greeting. If we hadn't discussed this greeting in class I would not even have noticed this movement.
I must admit that that day was such an eye-opener for me. I realised then how much other non-verbal communication I've obviously missed and how respectful the Xhosa culture is. Thank you Craig. Kind regards, - Tracy Van Turha
You have opened a new world for us & I am perpetually grateful for being part of the course. You have always been kind with your words, & I noticed never harsh in your manner of teaching. You have always been very patient with us & always used words of encouragement, rather than being over-disciplinary or rebuking. Thank you for your always-humble attitude - I can see the Xhosa in you. That has made me always look forward to your classes & already I feel it's a pity it came to an end. I look forward to more classes at a later stage, but realise that much work now has to be putting what's learnt into practice. For me, this has then been life-inspiring & I truly hope that I too, with this new knowledge, can make the world a better place, just by starting to communicate in others' language & create a better understanding with our brothers & sisters. Thank you for the gift you have given us & may all go well with your future endeavours! Ndiyabulela. - Ashley Samuels
The way the course is presented by you is really great. It creates a relaxed atmosphere and the students participate easily. I cannot really say that any change is required to the course presentation. We really enjoyed the experience and will promote your course further amongst our colleagues. Regards! - Wynand Vivier
I think what you can do is to create the third manual if it is not there yet because they are really good for learning Xhosa. We enjoyed the way you presented the lessons and the challenge you imposed on us to be willing to learn Xhosa or to put more effort on it. I was always looking forward to the next lesson and Ndifunde kakhulu. Enkosi kakhulu. Qubeka ngomsebenzi omuhle. Have a great day. - Kgaogelo Kmahlwele
Evening Class Group of 32 - Silwood Kitchen February 2009
âThe course was great because not only did we learn the basics of the Xhosa language but we also learned about the culture. It deepened my understanding of the Xhosa people on many levels. The course is structured so that we learn the basics quickly and efficiently. We get a comprehensive learning experience through lecture and practice in class, the CDs, the manual, and the homework assignments.â - Joanna Cicchon
Course is great and just the right bite size chunks after a hectic days work. I really enjoy your sense of humour and your easy style and insights into the culture make it very accessible â I have learned a great deal. The class is really nice people â have to be to learn another culture and connect with the Africaâs people. - Kevin Creasey
âI think your approach to teach beginners the basics of a new language is very effective. Most other courses start off by trying to teach the boring difficult stuff first. Most of the students then get confused and despondent. Your approach, as far as I understand it, is to get students first to construct simple sentences and to teach them the bare basic grammar to do so. I think it is an excellent way, because the understanding of the language grows with the understanding of the grammar. Doing it your way the student has a sense of achievement instead of a feeling that the task of learning the language is too difficult and too much effortâ - Giel du Toit
âI think the course was most enjoyable and just the right balance for the strugglers and time challenged people like me as well as the more diligent/language-boff students. I really liked the fun way you presented the course with a great love and respect for the Xhosa people, their culture and language. Having previously been moderately conversant in easy fanigalo/chilapalapa, Xhosa was a totally closed book to me. Your course quickly unlocked the main elements and was very practical in getting me going in simple conversation. I feel I have a great skeleton to continue building on. Another thing I liked was your care and encouragement for each and every student, which I think, helped everyone to make good progress. Craig you are definitely an articulator of the new and wonderful cross cultural South African experience that combines the best of all our history and people â I feel the awesome vibe in this country is just going to keep growing â who knows where it is going to take us? - Kevin Creasey
âHaving been immersed in the Xhosa culture through my work, I thought it would be quite easy to pick up the language as I went along. I was mistaken there, I really needed someone to put me on the right track, teach me the basics and the way the language fits together. I feel that the beginnerâs course has done just that, it gives you enough grammar and vocab to string a whole lot of sentences together and to start making up sentences. I liked the way that we were taught useful escape phrases so that you can, at least, start a conversation and bow out when it all gets too much! I will certainly continue practicing and hopefully, in time, become more fluent. Thank you to Craig, who taught us in a very clear and methodical manner, which was easy to follow.â - Marion Gready
âWhat I appreciated (although I dreaded it) was you forcing us to speak in front of the whole class, if you hadn't I wouldn't have the confidence to speak to strangers.â Sieggy Cooke
"The course was different than what I expected. The course was informal enough to make you comfortable and not to let you feel embarrassed to try and speak Xhosa in front of other people. It was wonderful to meet such a lot of people that also want to learn to speak Xhosa and use the language with people in their own environment. Craig, thank you for the experience and the opportunity you gave me to start with a new language that will grow daily for me." - Petrie le Roux
"I think the classes went really well. These classes are great for people who are learning Xhosa as a second or third language with specific focus on functional and conversational use. I really enjoyed the experience of trying out all the new phrases I learnt with people I met and the response you get for trying to speak their language is really affirming! - Carly Abramovitz
"With Xhosa, the mountain we need to climb is massive. As you so correctly said, you cannot carry us, we must walk ! Its very difficult to learn a language from scratch as an adult as you well know. We can only motivate ourselves. It will be years before the fruit off the Xhosa tree tastes really good. But even now we can experience the reward of of taking our first steps over that bridge of uBuntu. Your course brings like minded, conscious people together and that in itself is great. So thank you Titshala, Siyathanda ukuthetha isiXhosa, Siyazama !!" (We love to talk Xhosa. We'll keep trying) - Stephen Praetorius
âThere are many barriers that separate people. They vary from believes to personality to race to... Language is the most important barrier in the sense that it has a lot to teach us about the other barriers and is the easiest most powerful tool to overcome these barriers and build bridges between people.I work with teenage Xhosa boys in the Pollsmoor prison and Craig's course has equipped me to cross the barriers between me and these boys in a more powerful way. Speaking a little Xhosa allows me to help them build a bridge between them and a brighter future in the communityâ - Francois Esterhuizen
Thanks very much for the course I enjoyed it greatly. I can't recommend any changes or feedback as I think the course was excellently presented. I can however tell you what I enjoyed most was the conversing in the one particular lesson, I think you called it something like "isiXhosa Qha" (Xhosa only!) This truly showed me how far we had all come in such a small space of time, pity time didn't allow for more of those, but it was great on its own. Also I think the constant encouragement was really key in motivating me, and to keep at it, without that I don't think I would have enjoyed the class as much, because the language was/is a challenge on its own, and it was comforting knowing that there was plan ...on hand. Well done on a great course!! Enkos Kakhulu - Anthony Clegg
Molo Titshala, I am having a ball in Xhosa class an finding the initial stuff you you have taught us very useful and practical. I am enjoying the humour and interaction in class and sometimes marvel at how you keep a straight face. Ndiyabulela. - Dr. Chris Scott
Eve class feedback - July 2009 Montebello
I always wanted to learn to speak Xhosa but due to language in general not being one of my strong points, I have put it off for many years. Having taken the plunge by doing Craigâs course, I have confirmed that Language is not my strong point, but never the less I was able to learn and understand much more in these 12 lessons that I would ever have thought possible. Craigâs genuine love of the language and his students makes for a comfortable and stimulating atmosphere in which to learn. - Rob Bailey
The classes were very good...really inspired me to take this further and acquire a certain degree of fluency in this language. It is a lot of fun and I love all the borrowed words from English and Afrikaans with changed spelling. - Anthea Haupt
Many people in South Africa can speak Xhosa. Not everyone who speaks it can teach it. Craig KNOWS how to teach! He has a gift for interacting with people of different ages and backgrounds, making everyone feel comfortable in class. He doesnât let anyone get away with not speaking Xhosa in class, but at the same time is aware of, and sensitive to, peopleâs anxieties about speaking in a group. Classes have just the right mix of learning and humour to make it an enjoyable experience. Although I already knew some Xhosa vocab, the course has given me the building blocks to use this vocab to communicate with correct grammar, as well as being a firm foundation from which to keep learning. I have been wanting to learn Xhosa for a long time and am so pleased that I finally took a step towards it! Other than that everything else was great: I like having a manual for visual learning and CDâs for lazier days. The classes were great for practicing speaking. It was rewarding to have conversations with you and realise how much I could say without reverting to English (when asked only the questions which I know!) Thank you â Iâm looking forward to CDs 3& 4!
- Ingrid Vriend
I am confident that I am now able to initiate, sustain and conclude a basic conversation in Xhosa, especially concerning greetings and personal information. I have acquired a small but useful vocabulary and an elementary grasp of Xhosa grammar. In addition, I have adopted a positive attitude towards learning and speaking the language. Craig, you presented me with knowledge which I could use immediately, and, most importantly, on which I can build afterwards. I THANK YOU. - Mildred De Wee (Noluthando)
Molo Craig
Sarah and I enjoyed the course tremendously. It was good to be stretched and learn something new. To see the joy (and in many cases surprise) on peopleâs faces when you spoke a bit of their language was very satisfying. You definitely have a gift for teaching this warm and rich language. The course was set at a very good level and it was easy to follow. I will definitely recommend your course to anyone who is looking to have an introduction to Xhosa.
I guess the frustration now is that there is just so much one can learn in 6 weeks so while I feel that I have an excellent basis from which to work there is still so much work to be done to be able to have more than a couple of sentences conversation with someone. So as for me (mna) I am battling with the âwhere do we go from hereâ question. I realise that to take it forward will require a lot of work and my reality is that I am not surrounded by Xhosa speakers in my work so practice is difficult. But these are questions for me to answer. - Tim and Sarah Henshall
I haven't studied anything new in about 10/12 years so was really worried that I might have bitten off more than I could chew embarking on learning a whole new language but I felt at ease from the first lesson. You've got a great style of teaching friendly, funny but serious enough to get the lesson across without being intimidating. The class size is perfect, the pace is perfect, and the length of the class just right. Thanks again so much for the course. Even having only learnt just a small bit I feel so much more at home in my own country!!
Enkos Kakhulu!!! - Jess
Dear Titshala
I really thought the way in which you teach isiXhosa was amazing. Knowing exactly what we need to know and then applying it. It is amazing to see how much of isiXhosa makes sense after such a short period of time. I found that wena umlungu knows where the difficulties arise from when learning as an English person and therefor in the end made it more easier for me to learn. I will most definitely join the next beginners course to finish what I have started. Ndithanda ukuthetha isiXhosa.Thank you for all that you have taught me.
Sobonana - Thumeka (Tanya Jordaan)
Dear Craig, Molo titshala.
I really enjoyed the 12week course. It was very informative while still being lots of fun, especially the ORALS!!!!! You really put us on the spot at the beginning of each lesson, which helped a great deal, because often at work you would converse with someone you felt comfortable with and who will rectify your mistakes. Otherwise it was great. Lots of insightful information in respect of the Xhosa culture. Sala kakuhle - Joy Pietersen
Eve class feedback - Sept 2009 Montebello
Craig has a passion not only for the Xhosa language but the culture and it's welcomingly infectious. His focus on practical, day to day Xhosa converstaion, makes it rewarding to learn and easy to apply in everyday life. The course has opened my eyes not only to another language but has made me more tolerant and understanding of the culture. I have developed such a respect for the xhosa people. The smallest effort makes one a member of the family. I hunger to learn more and every listening ear is willing to help.
thanks again Craig. truley made a huge impact...much fun and laughter was enjoyed in class
Chelsea Hartle
Friendly, non-academic and lively introduction to IsiXhosa words and
culture. I will recommend the course to anyone who is interested to learn
how to greet and introduce people appropriately and respectfully in
isiXhosa. Essential exercises framework and very good motivational support
provided for those with e-mail addresses. As quality rarely comes cheap,
this is a good value for money kind of course. Ndiyabulela!
Sobonana ngoThursday!
Frederic.
Hi Craig
Sorry for a slow response. I really I enjoyed the course, and canât think of anything to improve it. Iâve made various stabs at learning Xhosa over the years, and this is definitely the most successful â I like the way you build up oneâs knowledge slowly, and explain the construction of phrases and sentences gradually so that it all makes sense. Before we just learnt phrases off by heart and forgot them rapidly, so I could not easily construct my own sentences. Itâs also great having the cd and book to use for revision. I can heartily recommend this course to anyone
